ICC Football season wrap

The Vikings wrapped up the 2011 season with a 14-6 victory over Fergus Falls at the Noble Hall Field in Grand Rapids. The victory put a positive end on a tough season for the Vikings.

The Vikings finished the 2011 football season with a 3-6 record overall and a 1-3 record in the MCAC North Division.

The Vikings had several close calls in the 2011 season as they suffered three losses by seven points and two by 10 points.

The Vikings started the season with a 13-6 overtime victory against Ridgewater in which they mustered up only 160-yards of total offense. It was the Viking defense that stole the show as they limited the Ridgewater offense led by MCAC Northern Division Player of the Week, Terrance Neal.
He recorded 12 tackles, 2.5 sacks and forced two fumbles in the win.

The Vikings followed that up with a tough 38-31 road loss in Worthington to Minnesota West. It was a game where the Vikings special teams shined as Grand Rapids' Shain Powers was named the MCAC Northern Division Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts, with a 66-yard kick off return for a touchdown and a 45-yard punt return for a touchdown.

The Vikings followed that up with their first home game of the season when they welcomed eventual MCAC Southern Division winners and national power, Rochester, to the Noble Hall Field. The Vikings hung though throughout the contest but fell short as they suffered a 20-10 defeat to Rochester.

The woes continued for the Vikings on the road as they suffered two more losses when they were defeated by Central Lakes, 25-6, and Fond du Lac, 16-9, in Barnum.

The Vikings were able to break the skid when they welcomed Vermilion to the Dixon-Barle Field in Coleraine. The Vikings rode the legs of Gerard Graves to the 20-7 victory. Graves rushed for 182 yards and two scores while Brandon Welinski added the third score through the air for the Vikings.

The Vikings followed that up with two tough losses, dropping a 14-7 home loss to Mesabi Range. The game was scoreless for the first 53 minutes and then in the next two minutes and two seconds, 21 points were scored as Mesabi Range pulled out a key 14-7 victory over the Itasca Vikings.

Gerard Graves went over 100 yards for his second consecutive home effort for the Vikings. He finished the game with 112-yards on 24 carries. He had a sensational run that set up his one-yard score in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings second loss of the pair was a 35-25 road decision at the hands of Northland. The loss sent the Vikings to 1-3 in the MCAC Northern Division.

The Vikings wrapped up the 2011 season with a 14-6 victory over MSCTC-Fergus Falls at the Noble Hall Field. Touchdowns by Gerard Graves and Brandon Welinski provided the difference in the game for the Vikings.

The Vikings finished the season averaging 248.8 yards of total offense while allowing a stout 255.7 yards on defense. Welinski finished the season with 14 interceptions and five touchdowns passing. He hit for 687 yards on the season.

Graves was the go-to back for the Vikings when he finished with 640-yards rushing and four touchdowns. He averaged 5.2-yards per carry.

The Vikings lose 10 players from the 2011 Viking squad including all-everything player, Joe Bohaty. Bohaty accounted for five Viking touchdowns on the season. He finished with three interceptions as well for the Vikings.

The Vikings return a solid core of players as they look to build upon the 2011 season when practices begin in 2012.
