Player of the Month: Joe Bohaty
The Itasca Community College Athletics Department has announced Joe Bohaty as its Athlete of the Month.
Bohaty, a sophomore, was a two-way player for the Itasca Viking football team.
³It¹s an honor. We finished the year out with a win and that¹s all that matters, getting the win,² Bohaty said. ³I had a pretty month for myself. It didn¹t end up being the season that we wanted but we had fun and had a good time.² Bohaty, a Moose Lake-Willow River alum, has been featured on both sides of the ball for the Vikings.
³Joe is a second year player and has been great ever since we got him,² ICC head coach Dan Mell said. ³We have used him at every position besides offensive and defensive line. He has played all over in his two years here.² Bohaty played one season with the Viking baseball team and two complete seasons with the ICC football team. Mell says that Bohaty was always the first one on the field and the last one off the field.
³Joe is the type of kid that is the first one on the field and the last one to leave the field,² Mell said. ³Obviously, playing multiple positions, he has to practice at different positions, throwing the ball, catching the ball, his reads and things like that. He is all over the field. He puts in a lot of extra time on the field.² Bohaty came to ICC to play football and baseball for the Vikings.
³I had a blast doing both sports,² Bohaty said. ³You couldn¹t ask for better coaches in Dan Mell and Justin Lamppa as well as coach Robbie Rapp with the football team, just love those guys.² Bohaty starred at corner and safety on the defensive side of the ball. While on offense, he saw time at wide receiver and quarterback. He was also the punter for the Vikings.
³I was just about wherever they needed me on offense. On defense, I played corner and safety,² Bohaty said. ³I love both sides of the ball and had a ball playing both.² While the Vikings didn¹t have the season that they hoped for, (they finished with a 3-6 record overall) Bohaty says it was important to stick out the season.
³Keeping strong with your teammates and staying together is the most important thing,² Bohaty said. ³We are a family out there and I want to thank all the guys that stuck it out.² Bohaty says one of the main things to improve during his time at ICC was his confidence level from when he first walked on the field.
³My confidence has gone up so much. I didn¹t know what to expect my first game last year,² Bohaty said. ³I came out of that game with nine tackles and two interceptions. I started my career off pretty well here and ended it well.² Mell says Bohaty is a player that the Vikings will miss. Most importantly, he was a good person as well as a good athlete.
³He is a great person. He is the type of kid that if a player is down emotionally, physically or whatever, he is the first that is there throwing a hand around him and picking him up,² Mell said. ³He is a very good student. He has always done well academically. He will be missed when he is done here after this semester.² Bohaty hopes to play college at either the Division II or Division III level. He has not made a decision yet on what school he wants to attend. He is a business marketing major. He says his time at Itasca was great.
³The school is awesome. We have small class sizes just like high school,² Bohaty said. ³It¹s nice, you get to know your teachers and they will work with you if you have to miss a day or not.²
