Testing Center - ICC Library


To ensure academic success, new students at Itasca are required to take a placement test. The College Board Placement Test, Accuplacer, assesses skill levels in English composition, mathematics and reading. Test results are used to determine the appropriate course placement. Placement tests are offered on a regular basis throughout the year and the first set of tests are free.

A student who meets one of the following criteria and can provide documentation may be exempt from taking the assessment:

  • The student has a college degree.
  • The student has passed college level math and/or English classes with a grade of "C" or higher.
  • The student has been assessed within the last three years.
  • If student as an ACT score of 24 or higher in math, English or reading may be exempt from that portion of the test

If you have a disability or a temporary disabling condition that will prevent you from taking the tests under standard conditions, please contact Disability Services at 218-322-2433 V/TTY.

Placement results do not determine admission to, do determine courses placement. If your reading score results in placement into Reading 0092, you must enroll in Reading 0092 during your first semester. If your scores are below the lowest level of developmental coursework, you may be referred to Adult Basic Education (ABE) .

You are expected to complete all courses numbered below 1000 prior to the completion of 30 credits.

If you are not satisfied with your placement results, you may retest once per subject area. A $10 retest fee will be charged. Retest options apply only to initial course placements. Once you have begun any course in English composition or math, you may not use the retest option to attempt to change your placement. To appeal initial course placement, contact a counselor or advisor.

Course enrollment may be canceled if you do not follow the placement test requirement. Course refunds may not be issued for inappropriate registration.

General Educational Development (GED)

Itasca Community College is an official General Educational Development (GED) testing center.  The tests are high school equivalency examinations, which are designed for persons 18 and older who have not completed high school.  Age waivers may be obtained for some 16-17 year olds for special or unusual circumstances.  Components of the test include English usage, essay writing, social studies, science, reading and mathematics.  Persons wishing to find out dates and times for the GED may contact Kim Olson at 218-322-2390.

External Studies

The Testing Center provides proctoring services for students who are in external study programs. Persons wishing to schedule a test may contact Kim Olson at 218-322-2390. 

PPST Testing and ACT Testing

Itasca Community College is an official site for both PPST and ACT testing.  These tests take place at various times on Saturdays throughout the academic year.   To register for these tests you need to contact PPST or ACT directly at www.ets.org/praxis/   or www.act.org 

Make Up Tests

Students who need to make up a test can do so during regular Testing Center hours.  It is the student's responsibility to contact their instructor and have the test sent down to the Testing Center.  There are sign up sheets outside the Testing Center door for students who are interested in taking a test.
